Book reports have remained a fundamental educational assessment tool throughout elementary school, high school, and college. Close study and critique of texts form a life-long skill, one which benefits all, beyond childhood years. One of the greatest challenges parents face is teaching their children how to understand, analyze, and write about complex subjects such as grammar, language, and reading. This is where the printable book report guidelines come in.

Students are encouraged to write book reports based on their own experiences, which are then highlighted and organized according to specific topic areas. Teachers can create worksheets for each lesson plan and each semester’s assignment. In doing so, teachers can help their students develop skills that will prepare them for high school and college-level work. High school students may need to write book reports about a specific person, place, or issue. On the other hand, college students will have to write book reports that examine an issue from a global perspective.

Benefits of Book Report Templates:

The most important skill developed through the use of these book reports is reading comprehension. Students must be able to read the text and comprehend the meaning behind the written word. The first step toward improving reading comprehension is understanding the purpose of a reading test. It is typically comprised of two sections. The first section consists of a topical competency test that tests the student’s ability to read and analyze information from a prescribed reading list. The second section assesses the student’s reading comprehension in terms of the number of words per page, word frequency, and sentence complexity.

Students must also master the skills necessary for research. Students should be able to determine how and where to search for data, and what sources are reliable. Many book report templates recommend the use of primary sources–an example of which would be secondary sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and thesauruses. However, students should also be aware of how to check sources for accuracy. In addition, high school students should be taught how to conduct independent research and draw on multiple resources.

Readers should develop an active, yet clear-cut plot summary. Book report templates often include a basic plot summary in the table of contents, as well as a detailed character analysis in the author bio section. Allowing students to develop their interpretation of the plot synopsis and character analysis will help them when they are presenting their written work to their fellow students on the project. The plot summary and character analysis should both be clear and detailed.  Developing these skills requires the active observation and interpretation of the text.

Tasks of the Teachers:

One of the main tasks of teachers is developing a reading assessment. The goal of this assessment is to provide teachers with an idea of how students understand and process the material, which helps determine whether students are developing correctly. While reading assessments don’t need to be comprehensive, they must provide enough information for teachers to evaluate how students are progressing in reading and how they could improve. Unfortunately, many book reports do not provide enough information to teachers so their assessments will fail.

Students who understand the book reports are more likely to complete them. This is why teachers often encourage their students to write the main body of the assignment. They should submit the main body and supporting details in the last two or three paragraphs. Supporting details such as bibliographies and references are a valuable tool in encouraging students to participate in the project.

Asking students to read an article, take a Listen and Learn Exercise, view a video, or attend a webinar about the topic is also a good way to make sure that students understand the material. If teachers do not offer guidance and examples of real book reports, the assignment may fail to provide students with the experience and guidance they need to succeed.

Finally, teachers should allow students to submit their book reports without feeling pressured to do so. Although it can be exciting to have students submit their book reports, they should not be pushed to do so. Students may be intimidated by the process and may even feel as though they are being penalized for writing a poorly written report. By allowing students to submit their book reports at their own pace, teachers can ensure that the assignment is truly worthy of their effort.
